SIDE HUSTLES TO START IN 2020

Increasing your income is a great idea if you’re planning to pay off more debt or increase your savings in 2020!  Think you need to physically leave your home on a Saturday and go to a second job to earn some extra cash? While there’s nothing wrong with that (I love my second job!) there are SO many gigs you can do from the comfort of your own bed. I mean home… because we should probably try to get out of bed and at least to the couch on the weekends... right?

When choosing a side hustle, there is one factor that is most important to consider. TIME! Does this hustle require you to work before or after your regular job? Does it require you to work on weekends? Is there a minimum amount of required hours? And perhaps the most important question to ask yourself, is the amount of time you will spend worth the amount you are getting paid?

Now that we’re thinking about that, let’s jump into the list!

    • Rent your place out with AIRBNB/VRBO

      • With both airBNB and VRBO you can rent out one, two, or your whole house! But FYI, many apartment buildings have banned the renting out of units (you would find this in your lease).

    • Donate plasma

      • Before anyone jumps out at me for this one, there are different side hustles that can be extremely beneficial during different seasons in life. This side hustle can be a bit time consuming at first (think some health testing, a bit of waiting, etc.), but can be easy money once you get the hang of it.

    • Rent your car out

      • Going out of town? A two vehicle family thinking about going down to one? Considering car sharing!  Turo makes it easy to list your vehicle so others can use it. They also screen everyone that uses their service, so you can stress less about who will be driving your vehicle.

    • Rent out your wedding dress

      • If selling your wedding dress outright isn’t of interest to you, consider renting out your wedding dress. Websites like Rent My Dress allow you to rent your dress out to other brides. You might even be able to recoup the cost of the dress entirely after some time!

    • Sell things in your home that you aren’t using

      • Post things that you’re not using in your home (literally, anything!) on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or apps like OfferUp. This is a great way to earn some extra cash for items that you likely aren’t getting much use out of anyway. And let’s be honest, Marie Kondo taught us all the decluttering and minimizing is awesome.

    • Teach English online (VIPkid)

      • If you’re a fluent English speaker, enjoy teaching, and have a 4  year degree, a gig like VIPkid might be perfect for you! Teach English online, set your own schedule, and work from home.

    • Walk dogs

      • Do you love dogs? Sign up with Rover or Wag and walk others pups on your free time! You can also sign up to pet sit/house sit.

    • Start a meal prep service

      • Do you love cooking? Find enjoyment in meal prepping? Some people don’t! Look into starting a service where you prep meals for folks and deliver them to their homes. Consider advertising for your start up service on Craigslist or local Facebook groups.

    • $ Saving Websites

      • Get involved with websites that allow you to earn money easily! With Swagbucks, you can take surveys or watch videos to earn points that can then be used to purchase a wide variety of gift cards.  Rakuten also you to create an account and do your online shopping (just as you’d normally do) while earning cash back on your purchases! They partner with many different business and retailers to allow opportunities for maximum cash back.

    • Virtual assistant

      • Love technology? Knowledgeable about building websites and the various platforms, or super great at Instagram or Pinterest? Consider becoming a virtual assistant. This is a great one because there are so many free resources online to help you LEARN how to be good at various virtual assistant-esque tasks!

    • Write an ebook

      • Love to write? Know how to do a skill that others might want to learn? Create an ebook! Ebooks can easily be sold and promoted online and provide a stream of passive income (with little to no work on your part once it’s written) for years to come.

    • Become a wedding planner/day of coordinator

      • Love weddings? Many brides are looking for someone to assist them with planning, decorating, or coordinating their big day! Day of Coordinators assist with making sure the flow of the day is flawless and assisting with any bumps in the road that might occur.

    • House sitter

      • Websites like MindMyHouse connect house sitters with homeowners. Consider “watching” someone's home over a free weekend or summer break!

    • Deliver for Postmates

      • People who deliver with Postmates can choose to drive or bike while picking up food orders for people in their community and delivering the orders to them.

    • Snow removal

      • Post on Craiglist, in Facebook groups, post on your Facebook page, etc. that you are willing and able to assist with snow removal! There are SO many people in need of assistance with this throughout the winter, especially following the big snow storms.

    • Become a translator

      • Speak more than one language? Whether in-person, by phone, or online, translation services are always needed. What’s available around you may vary based on the language, but a quick search on Google and you should be well on your way to getting good use and money out of your language abilities.

    • Publish articles on Medium

      • Love to write? Blogger or otherwise, consider publishing some articles on Medium, where you can earn money for the amount of time that folks spend reading them.

    • Get a part-time job somewhere you’re already spending money

      • If you’re thinking that a part-time job could be fun, consider applying somewhere that you’re already spending money. For example, your local gym or coffee shop, so you can benefit from the discount somewhere that you’re already shopping!

    • Teach a class on SkillShare

      • Love teaching others? Have a skill (unique or otherwise) that others would like to learn? Consider creating a course on SkillShare where others can learn from you at their leisure.

    • Teach a class for your local community education

      • Do you love teaching others, but would rather do it in person? Do you have a skill that others would like to learn? Reach out to your local community education and see how to go about teaching a class.
